العمارة لون من ألوان الثقافة الإنسانية، لأنها تعبيرٌ عن الذاتية، وليس تعبيرا عن حاجة الإنسان لمتطلبات حياته اليومية ، فبعض العلماء يعتبرون الفن ضرورة حياتية للانسان كالماء والطعام ، فالفنون الإبداعية تحمل خبرات وتجارب الحياة، فهي وسيلة راقية لتنوير وتعليم الإنسان، وتربية ذوقه، وحسّه الجمالي.
لقد تناقلت الشعوب فنون العمارة ، لتجميل المدن والقصور والمعابد ، وعلى سبيل المثال فإن العمارة الاسلامية تركت بصماتها على عناصر العمارة المسيحية في الكثير من الظواهر مثل النوافذ المزدوجة، والعقود المنسوخة، والعقود الثلاثية الفتحات،والشرفات والكوابيل والأبراج، ومثل القباب المضلعة والزخارف والمنحوتات الغائرة المتعددة الألوان، وغير ذلك من الأشكال والعناصر، وكانت الفكرة الزخرفية هي وحدها التي أوحت للفنان الأوروبي منذ القرن الرابع الهجري فكرة الاقتباس من حروف العربية وتسجيلها بالحفر على تيجان الأعمدة.
