Bennabi fait partie du cercle restreint de penseurs qui ont applique leurs capacites d'analyse a la comprehension des mecanismes sociologiques qui produisent les civilisations et les dysfonctionnements qui entrainent leur declin. Le grand probleme auquel il a ete confronte le long de son itineraire, a ete de savoir comment arracher les musulmans au determinisme de leur histoire. Mediateur entre la civilisation de l'Islam et celle de l'Occident, il est de tous les penseurs musulmans des deux derniers siecles celui qui a propose la vision de l'islam la plus compatible avec le sens de l'histoire. Il n'a pas pense les seuls problemes du monde musulman, mais ceux du monde en voie de globalisation qu'il voyait sortir de la deuxieme guerre mondiale.
Toute son oeuvre porte l'empreinte d'une vision d'ensemble de l'avenir du monde avec ses promesses et ses contradictions. Il voyait le denouement de ces dernieres dans la mise en place d'une ''convivencia universelle'' ou pourraient cohabiter dans un cadre global les differentes cultures. Ce paradigne ne pouvait pas etre compris de son temps. Seules les recentes evolutions et la situation internationale telle qu'elle se presente en ces premieres annees du troisieme millenaire peuvent permettre sa comprehension. Si Bennabi n'est pas le premier a deceler dans le travail de l'histoire la tendance mondialiste, il est par contre le premier a situer l'islam dans cette perspective et a vouloir l'y installer. Il ne faut pas s'attendre en parcourant sa pensee a des audaces inconoclastes: Bennabi n'est pas venu pour reformer l'islam, mais pour revolutionner la culture musulmane, l'esprit et la vision du monde vehicules par cette culture. Ce faisant, il a brise maints tabous et ''decanonise'' l'histoire du monde musulman, telle qu'elle a ete presentee par la pensee traditionnelle.
Il n'a pas propose un shema de reconstruction du monde musulman ou un prototype de l'homme musulman, mais leur a indique des voies et une vocation. Il a enrichi les sciemces sociales d'une meilleure connaissance de la psychologie et de la sociologie musulmanes et fourni une interpretation de l'histoire musulmane dont nous avons besoin aujourd'hui pour reconcilier l'Islam avec le monde.
