تعتبر رواية فيليت الأكثر طموحاً من بين أعمال شارلوت برونتي من حيث إتّساع رقعة الخبرة الإنسانيّة الّتي تصوّرها، ومن حيث مهارة المؤلفة في رسم الشخصيّات.
ويلاحظ أنّ روايات شارلوت برونتي هي أقرب ما تكون إلى السيرة الذاتيّة، ليس فقط فيما يتعلّق بالبيئة الّتي تدور فيها الأحداث، بل أيضاً فيما يتعلق بالشخصيّات وبالعلاقة فيما بينها، وتمتاز بطلات شارلوت برونتي بإحساس عميق بالكرامة، وبذوق رفيع يذكرنا بالمؤلفة نفسها.
وفي الوقت الّذي تضع فيه المؤلّفة بطلاتها في مواقف صعبة، نجد أنها لا تفتح لهنّ طريقاً سهلةً تؤدي بهنّ إلى السعادة وتحقيق الذات.
تتحدّث رواية فيليت عن فتاة اسمها (لوسي سناو) ترعرعت في الريف الإنجليزي، وعملت خادمةً ثم مربيةً للأطفال في منازل النبلاء الأثرياء.
ظلت (لوسي سناو) تتنقل من منزل إلى آخر إلى أن انتهى الأمر بموت عرّابتها، فقرّرت الهجرة إلى فرنسا بحثاً عن عمل آخر وفرصة أخرى للحياة.
الرواية مليئة بالأحداث والمواقف وقصص الحبّ الجميلة الّتي لا تخلو من فكاهةٍ وحزن وخيبة أحياناً... رواية تجسّد الجانب الإجتماعيّ والدينيّ والأخلاقيّ لتلك الفترة، وتظهر العلاقة بين أفراد الطبقات الإجتماعية، وتسلط الضوء على حياة المثقّفين والجانب الفكريّ والمعنويّ لأبطال الرواية.
