The Book Loft is the story of Ra’ed, whose mother and father have nurtured in him a love of reading. Through a conversation with Jido, his grandfather, Raed realizes how unique he and his brother Ashraf are in a part of the world where families rarely read books for pleasure and where the idea of public libraries for children is virtually unheard of. Ra’ed learns more about libraries from his mother and decides to start one with his friends. Through teamwork and community participation, Ra’ed’s idea becomes reality and, by the end of the book, he and his friends and neighbors have created a warm place where children of all ages can come and enjoy the magic of reading. The Book Loft is a multicultural experience, written with humor and interspersed with messages of tolerance and love of family and community. Ra’ed is a typical eleven year old boy whose likes, dislikes, hopes and concerns are similar to those of an eleven year old boy anywhere else in the world, but whose culture and community also play a large role in his life. Children anywhere will easily identify with Ra’ed while learning that kids are kids no matter where they come from. The book is suitable for children 8-11 years of age, depending on their English reading level. The author originally wrote The Book Loft for her sons who are avid readers. She could not find books that reflect the lives they live in Jordan and wanted to create a character and settings that her children could relate to. Her sons loved the book and insisted that she publish it.
