ترجع فكرة بناء الأهرامات إلى اعتقاد المصريين القدماء في خلود الروح، وإلى اعتقادهم في البعث مرة أخرى وبوجود حياة أبدية مستمرة تأي فيما بعد، لهذا بنى المصريون القدماء مقبرة حصينة توضع فيها الجثة بعد تحنيطها، وتزود بمجموعة كاملة من حاجيات الميت كالأدوات وقطع الأثاث وأنواع الأطعمة والشراب التي كان يستعملها في حياته اليومية، حتى إذا رجعت إليه الحياة، عاد الإنسان إلى حياته مجهزا بكل ما يحتاجه، أما بالنسبة لتك الصور التي تم نقشها على جدران المقبرة ، فإنها مناظر من حياتهم اليومية، تبعث على النشاط والحيوية وتبعث السرور لدى الأموات بعد استرجاع الحياة. لقد امتلأت ممرات الأهرامات في السابق بممتلكات الملوك التي لا تقدر بثمن، والتي دفنوها معهم حتى يستعملوها في الحياة الأخرى، وقد نُهبت كنوز الأهرامات منذ القديم، للإشارة فإنها بنيت وسط الصحراء عن يمين الوادي، من إقليم الفيوم جنوبا إلى الجيزة شمالاً.
