Note: Actual identity of author may be Joseph Howe, 1834-1888 ("Joe Hour" in the crew list).
Note: Preface says "Two young men, led to engage in the whale-fisheries, and spending five years in the employment, have compiled from their log-books and their recollection a plain, unvarnished narrative of this period." Second author may be Jackson Holmes Chase.
Note: Chapter XXVII, the legend of Kinau and Tuanoa, appears to be only slightly modified from the story as told in "The Natural History of the Sperm Whale" by Thomas Beale, published over twenty years earlier.
