The purpose of this edition is to help the student to read and understand Shakespeare's play with as much as easy and enjoyment as possible. Henry IV, part 1 is a long play, requiring some knowledge of the historical background ( which is provided in the Notes). what makes it particularly interesting, however, is shakespeare's skill in adapting the historical facts to his political hyprocrisy; at the same time it is a low comedy about ordinary people. Notes are given on the historical events, people and places mentioned in the play, and on the numerous classical and bibical references. Difficult and archaic words are translated, and complex passages are paraphrased in modern English. It is assumed, however, that the reader are familiar with such well-known forms as the archaic second person singular ( 'thou', 'thee', 'thy', 'thine', instead of 'you', 'your', 'yours') and with old forms of verb endings, such as the -st ending in the second person singular.Throughout, the aim has been to enable students to acquire a quick understanding of the play, and to help them enjoy both the high drama and the low comedy of this extraordinarily rich play.
