ولد وليام جيمس في مدينة نيويورك في الحادي عشر من يناير عام 1842.
وهو فيلسوف أمريكي ومن رواد علم النفس الحديث.
كتب كتبا مؤثرة في علم النفس الحديث وعلم النفس التربوي, وعلم النفس الديني والتصوف, والفلسفة البراغماتية.
وكان شقيق الروائي المعروف هنري جيمس وأليس جيمس كاتب اليوميات.
يُعتبر جيمس واحدا من المفكرين الرواد في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر, ويعتبره الكثيرون أعظم الفلاسفة المؤثرين الذين أنجبتهم الولايات المتحدة, فيما اعتبره آخرون "أب علم النفس الأمريكي".
بالإضافة إلى أنه يعتبر مع "تشارلز ساندرس بيرس" و"جون ديوي", من المؤسسين الكبار للفلسفة البراغماتية.
توفي جيمس في السادس والعشرين من أغسطس عام 1910.
