يرفض الدكتور فاوستس بروح نهضوية قبول أية حدود أو تقاليد أو سلطات تقيد سعيه نحو المعرفة والثروة والقوّة اللامحدودة، وينحدر من طموحاته الكبيرة إلى الممارسة الخطرة لاستحضار الأرواح والشعوذة، دافعاً الثمن الأقصى (روحه) إلى إبليس، إلا أنه يدرك في النهاية بأن قواه السحرية ما هي سوى قوى وهمية لا حقيقية، وبأن الحرية التي أمل بها لم تكن سوى شكل آخر من أشكال العبودية. يجسد فاوستس العقل النبيل الذي تحطمه الشهوات الدنيوية، والطموح الجامح الذي يتخطي المحدودية البشرية في جو من المأساة الكئيبة التي ينحاز بطلها للشر الشيطاني مما يقوده إلى سقوطه الجهنمي.
