ابن المعتز (247 - 296 هـ = 861 - 909 م)
عبد الله بن محمد المعتز بالله ابن المتوكل ابن المعتصم ابن الرشيد العباسي، أبو العباس: الشاعر المبدع، خليفة يوم وليلة.
ولد في بغداد، وأولع بالأدب، فكان يقصد فصحاء الأعراب ويأخذ عنهم.
وصنف كتبا، منها «الزهر والرياض» و «البديع - ط» و «الآداب» و «الجامع في الغناء» و «الجوارح والصيد» و «فصول التماثيل - ط» و «حلى الأخبار» و «أشعار الملوك» و «طبقات الشعراء - ط» وجاءته النكبة من حيث يسعد الناس: آلت الخلافة في أيامه إلى المقتدر العباسي، واستصغره القواد فخلعوه، وأقبلوا على صاحب الترجمة، فلقبوه «المرتضي بالله» وبايعوه بالخلافة، فأقام يوما وليلة، ووثب عليه غلمان المقتدر فخلعوه.
وعاد المقتدر، فقبض عليه وسلمه إلى خادم له اسمه مؤنس، فخنقه. وللشعراء مراث كثيرة فيه.
وله «ديوان شعر - ط» في جزأين.
ومما كتب في سيرته «ابن المعتز وتراثه في الأدب - ط» لمحمد خفاجة، و «عبد الله ابن المعتز، أدبه وعلمه - ط» لعبد العزيز سيد الأهل

يقول ابن المعتز موضحا سبب تأليف الكتاب: ( قدمنا في أبواب كتابنا هذا بعض ما وجدنا في القرآن واللغة، وأحاديث الرسول وكلام الصحابة والأعراب وغيرهم، وأشعار المتقدمين من الكلام الذي سماه المحدثون بديعا، ليعلم أن بشارا ومسلما وأبا نواس لم يُسبقوا الى هذا الفن، ولكنه كثر في زمانهم حتى سمي بهذا الاسم، ثم أن حبيب بن أوس الطائي من بعدهم شغف به حتى غلب عليه).
