المنحدرات هي تلك السطوح المنحدرة من سطح الأرض عن المستوي الأفقي، وتشكل المنحدرات معظم سطح الأرض. ولما كانت أشكال سطح الأرض عبارة عن مركب معقد من المنحدرات، فإن تحليل خصائص هذه المنحدرات سوف يلقي الضوء على العوامل والعمليات الجيومورفولوجية المميزة التي ساهمت في تشكيلها سواء في الماضي أو الحاضر، كما أنها توضح أيضاً حركة المواد السائدة على هذه المنحدرات وتأثيرها على تطور المنحدرات من ناحية، وخطورتها على الأنشطة البشرية من ناحية أخري.
