نشر دويل في يوليو 1891 قصة قصيرة بعنوان «فضيحة في بوهيميا» في مجلة ستراند –و تلك القصة غيرت حياته، حيث قدم شخصية المفتش شارلوك هولمز وصديقه واتسون إلى طبقة كبيرة من الجمهور واصبحا ابطال قصصه البوليسية بعد ذلك والتى كانت تتسم بالاثارة والتشويق وقد كتب هنا ثلاثة قصص لشارلوك هولمز وصديقه واتسون بعنوان:
فضيحة فى بوهيميا وعصابة ذوى الشعر الاحمر وحصان السباق
بالاضافة الى قصص اخرى مثل:
عيد الميلاد في الثكنات والعودة وعيد ميلاد دوق رايشتادت وسيني في قلعة شونبرون
وفي الحي و اسمه بين المفقودين وفتور الحب و سيتشيلو و سر النهر الجليدي
