قال ذلك ودخل غرفته وهو يوخزه ضميره على الكذب الذي أصبح لا يفارق لسانه، وحينما يختلي بنفسه في الليل يفكر في كل ما حدث في الفترة الأخيرة، وجد أنه ليس فقط كاذبًا، بل أيضًا خائنًا. لم يخن مريم فقط، بل خان أيضًا منصور الذي استأمنه على أهله وبيته، كل يوم ينام فيه مع جلد الذات يستيقظ بعدها مستكملاً تأنيب الضمير، وهذا التأنيب يزداد يومًا بعد يوم إلى أن بدأ يتقزز من نفسه ويشعر بالحزن بسبب ما يفعل، هذا بالإضافة إلى أن رزقه بدأ يقل بسبب إهماله ونسيانه المتكرر وعدم تركيزه في أمورٍ كثيرة كان يجب أن يفعلها في عمله، فقرر أن يتوقف عما يفعله، وأن يبتعد كليًا عن جميلة وليس تدريجيًا، فبدأ يسير في طريق آخر غير الطريق الذي يمر فيه بجانب دار جميلة، تجنبًا لمقابلتها.
