"تدور أحداث هذه القصة في زمنٍ ما في المستقبل، في مكانٍ لا يحدث ذكرهُ أيّ فرق، لأنه يشبه كلّ مكانٍ آخر".
رواية "حارس سطح العالم" لـ بثينة العيسى هي ديستوبيا مستقبلية، تحدث في زمن ما بعد سقوط الديموقراطيات، والثورة ضدّ الثورة المعلوماتية، وتقنين التقنية، ومنع الانترنت.
في ذلك العالم، تعمل الحكومة دائبةً من أجل إسعاد مواطنيها، من خلال تخليصهم من فوائض المشاعر والرغبات والأحلام والخيالات، وإبقائهم على جادة "الواقعية الإيجابية" بتفريغهم من كل "مُمكناتهم الوجودية" و"رغباتهم غير المعقولة"؛ حيث توجد ثلاث رغبات مشروعة في الإنسان؛ "الرغبة في الانتماء، الرغبة في العمل، والرغبة في الإنجاب". تقوم فلسفة الدولة الجديدة على أنَّ "المخيّلة هي جذر كلّ الشرور"، وعليه، تبدأ الحكومة في التصدّي لتجليات المخيلة في جميع وجوهها، منذ الطفولة وحتى الأدب!
