الجغرافيا الرياضية هي فرع من فروع الجغرافيا البشرية ويتكون من كلمتين الأولى (Geography) وتعني جغرافيا المناطق والثانية (Sports) وتعني الرياضة بمفهومها العام سواء فيما يخص الألعاب الجماعية أو الفردية ويختصر المصطلح باللغة الإنجليزية بمفهوم (GeoSports).
للجغرافيا المناطقية، تأثيرات كبيرة على أنماط الأفراد السلوكية والاجتماعية والثقافية والغذائية، وهذا ما أثبتته الكثير من الدراسات والبحوث التي أكدت بكل وضوح على تأثير الجغرافيا على بنية الفرد البدنية وابداعاته في واحد من مجالات النشاط البدني طبقا للطبائع الوظيفية والحياتية، وهذا بطبيعة الحال له تاثيرات كبيرة في توجيه اهتمامات الأفراد نحو ممارسة نشاط بدني معين دون غيره ومن ثم الإبداع فيه، سواءً على مستوى المناطق البيئية داخل الدولة الواحدة، أو على مستوى الدول. ولتبسيط ذلك نأخذ على سبيل المثال رياضة ألعاب القوى باعتبارها أم الألعاب التي على أساس قواعدها ومسابقاتها تم البناء لعلم التدريب الرياضي.
