امروزه زندگی انسان با نحوه ی زندگی اجدادش بسیار متفاوت شده است و شاید یکی از اساسی ترین تفاوتها، وجود وسایل ارتباط جمعی در سطح جهانی باشد گرچه وجود این امکانات زندگی را بسیار راحت تر کرده است همانند بسیاری از امکانات دیگر استفاده ی نابجا یا بیش از حد از آن به بروز مشکلات و معضلاتی می انجامد که اعتیاد به اینترنت یکی از آنهاست. اعتیاد» به معنای عادت کردن غیر طبیعی جسمی یا روانی به هر ماده یا فعالیت خاص است. از نشانه های اعتیاد اختصاص دادن زمان بیش از حد برای یک کار یا فعالیتهای مرتبط با یک ماده ی خاص است که در ازای آن زمان برای انجام دیگر کارهای ضروری زندگی فدا میشود همچنین فرد معتاد در صورت فقدان دسترسی به ماده یا فعالیت مورد نظر دچار علائم ذهنی - روانی یا جسمی میشود که اصطلاحاً به آن علائم ترک گفته میشود. از دیگر نشانه های اعتیاد این است که فرد به آسانی نمیتواند فعالیت یا ماده ی مورد نظر را ترک کند و برای اجتناب از علائم ترک یا رسیدن به آرامش روانی، نیازمند تکرار مصرف ماده یا فعالیت مورد نظر است
