ابن الرومي هو أبو الحسن علي بن العباس بن جريج ، والمعروف بابن الرومي ، ولد في مدينة بغداد ، وهو ذو أصل رومي من جهة الأب ، وأصل فارسي من جهة الأم ، واشتهر بأنه من أشهر الشعراء المولدين في القرن الثالث الهجري في العصر العباسي ، تتلمذ ابن الروسي على يد محمد بن حبيب ، يتصف ابن الرومي بعدة صفات ، من أهمها : دقة الحس ، وحدة المزاج ، وسرعة الرضا ، وصدق المودة ، وحبه لأولاده وأهله ، وعطفه على الفقراء والمساكين.
لعل ظروف حياته المعقدة ، وتلاحق الأزمات ، والوفيات ، وفاة والده ووالدته وأخيه ثم أبنائه ، كل ذلك ترك في نفسه آثارا سيئة ، لم يستطع عليها صبرا ، ومما زاد في تأثيره وانفعاله ظلم الناس له وتخلي الأصدقاء عنه ، فتشاءم من كل شيء وصار ضيق الصدر سريع الانفعال ، وانعكس ذلك على شعره.
