بعد انتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية عام 1945، اختفت فجأة معظم الغواصات الألمانية .. فقط اختفت تمامًا وكأنها تلاشت إلى العدم، ووقتها كان من المعروف تمامًا أن هتلر لم يمت ولم ينتحر كما أشيع، وهو نفس ما أعلنه وقتها كل من ستالين وإيزنهاور، لكن كان في اعتقادهم أنه فر إلى الأرجنتين، لكن الحقيقة التي اكتشفها الجميع لاحقًا أن الأرجنتين كانت محطةً فقط للتوجه للقطب الجنوبي، وبالمصادفة وعلى سواحل الأرجنتين أيضًا سلم قائد إحدى غواصات النازيين نفسها، وفي التحقيقات لفت النظر لأول مرة أن الألمان كان لديهم مشاريعهم في القطب الجنوبي، وعليه وفي1947 أرسلت أمريكا بعض قواتها بقيادة ريتشارد بيرو والذي ذهب بغطرسة الأمريكيين وغرورهم الذي اكتسبوه بعد الحرب، ودون أن يعلم أنه يكشف سرًا من أخطر أسرار التاريخ قال لصحفيين سألوه عن سبب الذهاب للقطب، فقال بثقةٍ وصلت إلى حد الغرور:"إنها مهمة عسكرية".
