تنطلق هذه الدِّراسة من مجموعة تَساؤلاتٍ لازَمَتْ صاحبَها منذ بداية اشتغاله بالأدب العبَّاسيِّ؛ من قبيل: ما الَّذي طرأ على الأدب بعد انتقال المجتمع من الشَّفويَّة في نَقلِ المعارف إلى الكتابيَّة، وعن هذا التَّساؤل تتفرَّع تساؤلات أخرى؛ مثل ما الَّذي جعل الشُّعراء يتخفَّفون من كثير من الرَّواسم والصِّيغ الَّتي استقرَّت في بنية القصيدة، وما الَّذي حدا بالشُّعراء إلى استبدال عناصر جديدة فِيها بما هو راسخ في الوعيِ الجماعيِّ، ولا سيَّما في المطالع، وتتنازع هذا العمل مداخلُ متعدِّدةٌ، فموضوعه «الشَّفويَّة والكتابيَّة في العصر العبَّاسيِّ الأوَّل» يستدعي مدخلًا حول الثَّقافة الشَّفويَّة في علاقتها بالثَّقافة المكتوبة، وذلك لتلازم النَّوعين في الثَّقافة العربيَّة منذ أقدم عهودها، ولتبادل الهيمنة بينهما، ولاهتمام الموضوع بطورٍ كانت الثَّقافة الشَّفويَّة فيه مهيمنةً قَبل أن تُصبح الهيمنة للثَّقافة المكتوبة منذ أواخر القرن الثَّاني للهجرة، مع تخصيص الحديث عن طبيعة الشِّعر في هذين الطَّورَين الثَّقافيَّين.
