ارتفع منكبا جيمي، وانقبض صدره. ومال إلى الأمام وأراح يديه على حافة النافذة
وجعل وجهه على مستوى رأس الطفلة نفسه. فتح فمه ثم تريث لحظة ليتأكد. لكن لم
تبد جني مرييديث أي تردد البتة من جانبها؛ إذ جعلت تهز رأسها بتأن.
وقالت: «يحسن بكم أن تذهبوا وتتدبروا شيئا يمكنكم القيام به. كرروا كل الأشياء
التي اعتدنا فعلها، وافعلوها على نحو أفضل. أما أنا فقد فرغت من أمركم. لن أعرض
نفسي مرة أخرى ملا فعلتموه بي ذلك اليوم! وأنا أغسل أسناني هذا الصباح رأيت التقويم
ووجدت أن تاريخ اليوم هو الحادي والثلاثني. وأنا لن أعرض نفسي للضرب من ثلاثة
صبية مرة أخرى إلا في الثاني والثلاثني من الشهر! هل فهمتم؟ فلتمضوا في سبيلكم
فحسب! إنني لست خائفة منكم. فما زلت أستطيع أن أضرب أيا منكم، بل أستطيع
ضربكم جميعا. ولست خائفة منكم. وإنما فرغت من أمركم. وعلى كل حال، تلك الألواح
التي تقفون عليها هي من أجل بناء إصطبل لتشيف، وسوف أؤدي الحركات التي يؤديها
معسكر الكشافة رقم اثنان وعشرون. فقد انتهيت من التمثيل. ومن الآن سأصبح من
الكشافة الحقيقية، وسوف أمتطي حصانا وأحمل سوطا وأقرعه به إن راح يتراجع فوق
مكان شديد الانحدار. لكنني لن أضربه فيما عدا ذلك. ولن أضرب أي شيء لا يعادلني في
حجمي وقوتي. دعوا عنكم أمري! فقد انتهيت من أمركم!»
دارت جني مرييديث على عقبيها، ورفعت سروالها، وسارت في اتجاه الرواق الخلفي.
كان مربي النحل متكئا على حافة النافذة، فأحكم ذراعه حول فتاة العاصفة وجعل
يتفرس وجه جني وهي تتجه نحوه. كانت ملامحها ثابتة لا تتغري.
فقالت مولي كامريون: «إنها تقصد ما قالته! سوف تثبت على موقفها!»
فضمها جيمي بشدة وقال: «آمني!»
