هو محمد الطاهر بن محمد بن محمد الطاهر ابن عاشور ، الإمام الضليع في العلوم الشرعية واللغوية والأدبية والتاريخية .
تعلم في الكُتَّاب حتى أتقن حفظ القرآن ، والتحق بجامع الزيتونة في سنة ( 1310هـ / 1892م ) ، وتـتلمذ على يد الشيخ صالح الشريف ، وقرأ على جماعة من أعلام جامع الزيتونة ؛ منهم الشيخ إبراهيم المارغني ، وسالم بوحاجب ، وعمر ابن’الشيخ وغيرهم ، فأحرز شهادة التطويع سنة ( 1317هـ 1896م ) ، واجتاز مناظرة التدريس من الرتبة الثانية ( 1320 هـ / 1899م ) ، ونجح في مناظرة التدريس من الرتبة الأولى ( 1324هـ / 1903م ) ، وفي سنة ( 1325هـ / 1904م ) ، سمي نائبًا عن الدولة لدى نظارة جامع الزيتونة ، وفي سنة ( 1329هـ / 1913م ) ، سمي عضوًا في لجنة تنقيح برامج التعليم ، وفي سنة ( 1331هـ / 1913م )، سمي قاضيًا مالكيًّا للجماعة ، وبموجب ذلك دخل في هيئة النظارة العلمية المديرة لشؤون جامع الزيتونة، ثم سُمِّي شيخ الإسلام المالكي سنة ( 1351هـ / 1932م ) ، وشيخًا لجامع الزيتونة وفروعه سنة ( 1364هـ / 1944م ) ، واعتزل هذا المنصب سنة ( 1370هـ / 1951م ) ، ثم سمي عميدًا لجامعة الزيتونة في ( 1375هـ / أبريل 1956م ) .
قام برحلات إلى المشرق لأداء فريضة الحج ، وإلى أوربا وإستانبول؛ حيث شارك في مؤتمر المستشرقين سنة ( 1370هـ / 1951م ) .
كان من أعضاء المجمعين العربيـيـن في دمشق والقاهرة .
وهو أول من أحرز الجائزة التقديرية للرئيس الحبيب بورقيبة سنة ( 1388هـ / 1968م ) .
وكان جم النشاط ، غزير الإنتاج ، تزينه أخلاق رضية ، وتواضع عظيم ، وصبر وقوة احتمال ، وعلو همة واعتزاز بالنفس ، وصمود أمام الكوارث ، وترفُّع عن الدنايا .
توفي يوم الأحد ( 13 رجب 1393هـ / 12 أغسطس 1973م ) ، ودفن بمقبرة الزلاج .

هذا الكتـاب جمـع بين دفتيـه الفقـه والحـديث ، وذلك بوضعه للمحدثين منهجًا ؛ لانتقاء الأحاديث والرجال ، وطريقة للفقهاء ؛ لاستنباط الأحكام ، واستخراج الأصول ، وبناء الفروع عليها . ويعد إضافة جادة لشراح "الموطأ" للإمام مالك ابن أنس ، بل تجد فيه استدراكات قيمة ، وفوائد جمة يندر وجودها في المطولات من الشروح جادت بها قريحة الشيخ ابن عاشور ، ونطقت بها عبقريته العلمية . وعن هذا الكتاب قال العلامة الدكتور عبد الرحمن العثيمين : " كشف المغطى عظيم النفع يغني عن المجلدات ، وفيه مقدمة مفيدة للغاية (مقدمة تفسير الموطأ لابن حبيب )" . فالكتاب فيه نكت , وتحقيقات , وفتح لمغلقات , يفيد منها مبتغي الفقه والحديث , علمًا ومتعلمًا بأسلوب سلس عظيم النفع.
