كتاب الدين في الغرب لعزالدين عناية هو إطلالة على نظام اشتغال العقل الديني الغربي وعلى نمط سير عمل مؤسّسة الكنيسة. لا ينحو الكتاب في ذلك إلى التعاطي المجرّد مع هذين العنصرين، بل يتابع تنزيل التصورات وتنفيذ القرارات في الواقع، سيما لمّا يتمأْسس الدين ويغدو مؤسسة تنشد النفوذ والهيمنة. وفي تلك الرحلة للدين من الشعيرة، إلى الفكرة، إلى المؤسسة، ثمة ضبابية في التصورات العربية يصحبها قصور في معالجة مسائل الواقع الديني الغربي متأتية من نقص أدوات المتابعة ومحدودية الإلمام بقضايا المسيحية المعاصرة. إذ لا يشّكل الدين في الغرب شاغلا من شواغل المؤسسات الأكاديمية العربية أو مراكز الأبحاث الناشئة. والأمر متأتٍ من تقدير خاطئ ومضلِّل أنّ الغرب علماني وليس ثمة حاجة إلى متابعة أوضاعه الدينية وإيلائها بالغ الاهتمام. الأمر الذي أثّر في قدرات الإلمام وجعل الدارس يتعاطى مع قضايا الغرب الدينية بشكل سطحي يبلغ مستوى من التبسيط المخلّ، يركن فيها النظر إلى تهويمات غائمة مثال أن الكنائس خاوية إلا من المسنّين بعد أن هجرها روادها، ويغفل عن سائر الأنشطة التي تقدمها الأبرشيات دعما واحتضانا لمختلف فئات المجتمع.
