الريح هي شكل من أشكال الطاقة الشمسية التي تنتج عن التسخين غير المتساوي للغلاف الجوي من الشمس، وعدم انتظام سطح الأرض، ودوران الأرض، وتباين تسخين الأرض والبحار والمحيطات، والغطاء النباتي، والاختلافات في التضاريس ما بين التلال والوديان والجبال.
وفي بعض المناطق من الكرة الأرضية تهب رياح بصفة منتظمة، إما دائمة أو موسمية، وتكون في النصف الشمالي من الكرة الارضية باتجاه عقارب الساعة وتكون عكس عقارب الساعة في النصف الجنوبي للكرة الارضية، وتختلف أنماط وسرعة تدفق الرياح اختلافًا كبيرًا، ويتم الاستفادة من تدفق الرياح هذا في أغراض كثيرة، مثل ” الإبحار، وتوليد الكهرباء بواسطة التوربينات “.
