«المستطرف من كل فن مستظرف للشيخ الإمام محمد بن أحمد الخطيب الابشيهى وهو مشتمل على كل فن ظريف وفيه الاستدلال بآيات من القرآن وأحاديث صحيحة وحكايات حسنة عن الأخيار ونقل فيه كثيرا مما أودعه الزمخشري في ربيع الأبرار وابن عبد ربه في العقد وفيه لطائف عديدة من منتخبات الكتب المفيدة وأودعه من الأمثال والنوادر الهزلية والغرائب والدقائق والاشعار والرقائق وجعله مشتملا على أبواب عدتها أربعة وثمانون.[1]» ويقول المحقق إبراهيم صالح أن الأبشيهي اعتمد على ربيع الأبرار للزمخشري اعتمادًا شبه كلي، في الوقت الذي لم ينقل عن العقد الفريد إلا صفحاتٍ قلائل معدودات. كما اعتمد على كتب اخرى منها التذكرة الحمدونية لابن حمدون المحب والمحبوب للسري الرفاء وسراج الملوك للطرطوشي وحياة الحيوان للدميري وعجائب المخلوقات للقزويني.
