حاصل على ليسانس آداب قسم تاريخ جامعة عين شمس 1967 - دبلوم تمهيدي ماجيستير 1968 .
من أبرز أعماله مسلسل الناس في كفر عسكر (مسلسل) عن رواية بنفس الاسم .
يعتبر أول كاتب مصري صدرت له سلسلة من ثمان روايات عن الريف المصري تدور أحداثها جميعا داخل قرية كفر عسكر .
قدم خلال مسيرته العديد من الأعمال الهامة التي رصدت وعالجت الكثير من التغيرات السياسية والإجتماعية التي طرأت على المجتمع المصري .
حاصل على جائزة الدولة التقديرية في الآداب (مصر) عام 2014 عن مجمل أعماله حاصل على جائزة الدولة التشجيعية في الآداب عام 1985 عن مجموعة النبش في الدماغ حاصل على وسام العلوم والفنون من الطبقة الأولى 1985 جائزة نادي القصة 1963 جائزة المسابقة القومية بداية السبعينيات جائزة تيمور الأدبية في التسعينيات اختيرت روايته حكاية شوق ضمن أفضل مائة رواية عربية صدرت في القرن الماضي

حكايتنا هذه المرة عن أديب وفيلسوف وعالم عربى، ولد وعاش فى أزهى العصور الإسلامية فى عصر الدولة العباسية، التى حكمت العالم الإسلامى من بغداد، ولد فى سنة 159 هجرية، وعاصر فى حياته الخلفاء العباسيين: المهدى والهادى والرشيد والأمين والمأمون والمعتصم والواثق، ومن بعدهم عاش فى أواخر أيامه فى ظل حكم المتوكل والمنتصر والمستعين بالله والمعتز بالله، حيث رحل عن هذه الدنيا بعد أن عاش ما يزيد على تسعين عاماً، كتب خلالها ما يزيد على ثلاثمائه وخمسين كتاباً فى الفلسفة والأدب والتاريخ والجغرافيا والإجتماع وغيرها من العلوم. اسمه عمرو بن بحر بن محبوب وكان ينادى بأبى عثمان. لكنه عرف للأدباء والشعراء والخلفاء والعلماء باسم آخر اشتهر به، وشاع عنه، وهو الجاحظ، ولهذا الإسم الأخير قصة.
