منذ قرن من الزمان نشأ نشاط كبير في أوربا وأمريكا تناول دراسة الجنس البشري كمووع قائم بذاته، وأطلق على هذه الدراسة "أنثروبولوجيا" أي علم الإنسان، وكان أكثر الاهتمام عند علماء الأنثروبولوجيا منصباً أول الأمر على دراسة الإنسان من الناحية البيولوجية البحتة، ولكن سرعان ما تكشفت للموضوع وجوه عديدة ، مما أدى إلى اتساع المجال وإلى تعدد وسائل البحث إلى درجة كبيرة حتى أصبح الإلمام بمقتضيات جميع فروع الأنثروبولوجيا أمراً يتجاوز الطاقة الفردية فأدى هذا إلى تقسيم دراسة الإنسان إلى قسمين أساسيين.
