«داود بركات» هو صحفي وسياسي ومفكِّر إصلاحي لبناني عاش في مصر ونادى بالإصلاح السياسي والاجتماعي والتربوي، وقد كان رئيسًا لتحرير «جريدة الأهرام» لمدة ثلاثين عامًا.
وُلِدَ بركات في «يحشوش» بلبنان عام ١٨٦٨م لأسرة مسيحية مارونية، حيث درس هناك وأجاد اللغتين العربية والفرنسية، ثم سافر لمصر حيث عمل مدرِّسًا، ولكنه لم يلبث أن ترك التدريس ليلتحق بالعمل الصحفي.
تنقَّل بركات بين عدة صُحف حيث عمل بجرائد «النيل» و«المحروسة» و«القاهرة»، حتى انتهى به المُقام صحفيًّا بجريدة الأهرام التي كانت لا تزال في بدايتها صحيفة صغيرة تصدر في أربع صفحات بشكل غير منتظم، فعمل على تطويرها عندما تولَّى رئاسة تحريرها عام ١٨٩٩م، فقام بزيادة عدد محرريها وتحسين أحوالهم المادية وتدريبهم بشكل جيد على أسس الصحافة الحديثة، فأصبحت الأهرام في عهده صحيفة واسعة الانتشار منتظمة الصدور تصدُر فيما لا يقِل عن ست عشرة صفحة، كذلك أدخل عليها العديد من التعديلات والتطويرات في الإخراج، التي جعلت الأهرام أُولى الصحف العربية، وقد ظل بركات يرأس تحرير الأهرام مدة ثلاثين عامًا متواصلة، ويُعَدُّ بركات أطول من ترأَّسوا صحيفة مصرية، فاعتُبِر أحد شيوخ الصحافة المصرية.
كان بركات وطنيًّا محبًّا لمصر رغم كونه لبنانيًّا، فكان يهاجم الاحتلال الإنجليزي لمصر في مقالاته، ويقف في صف التيار الوطني المصري، فكان لقضايا العروبة والتحرُّر الوطني نصيب كبير من مقالاته.
تُوُفِّيَ بركات عام ١٩٣٣م بعد مرض لم يَطُلْ.

يؤرخ هذا الكتاب لشخصية إبراهيم باشا القائد الذي زيَّن جبهة الشرق العربي الحديث بفتحه لبلاد الشام. ويستهل الكاتب هذا المُؤَلَّف بذكره للبواعث السياسية التي دفعت محمد علي لفتح بلاد الشام؛ ثم يؤصل تاريخ هذا الفتح بذكره المساعي والجهود الحثيثة التي بذلها إبرهيم باشا في هذا الفتح الذي وصل به إلى تُخُومِ آسيا الصغرى. وقد دوَّن الكاتب في هذا المُؤَلَّف كل ما يتعلق بالحوادث والوقائع التي صاحبت هذا الفتح العظيم، وما أسفر عنه من نتائج سياسية واجتماعية خلَّدت إبراهيم باشا في الصفحة الزاهرة من تاريخ فتوحات الشرق، وقد وفق الكاتب من خلال عرضه للدور القيادي الذي بذله إبراهيم باشا في البرهنة على أنَّ القائد هو الشخصية الفاعلة التي تستطيع التأثير فيمن حولها من أجل تحقيق أهداف مشتركة.
