تتكون المواد من جزيئات، وتتكون الجزيئات من عناصر، والعناصر من ذرات، وعلى هذا يمكن القول بأن الذرة هي وحدة العنصر ، وتتكون الذرة من نواة ( ( Nucleusيتركز فيها وزن الذرة، ويدور حول هذه النواة في محيطات خارجية عدد من الإلكترونات، التي يعتبر وزنها ضئيلا جدا بالنسبة إلى وزن نواة الذرة، وهذه الإلكترونات جميعا محملة بشحنة سالبة. وتتكون نواة الذرة من عدد من البروتونات ( (Protons) وعدد من النيوترونات (Neutrons ) والبروتون هو جسيم صغير ثقيل نسبيا، محمَل بشحنة كهربائية موجبة، وأما النيوترون فيبلغ وزنه تقريبا وزن البروتون وهو متعادل كهربائياً، وذرة الأيدروجين تعتبر أبسط الذرات، وتتكون من بروتون واحد، وفي محيطها الخارجي إلكترون واحد .
