إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

لَمْ يَجِدِ القُبطانُ ترومبول، البَحَّارُ المُخضرَمُ الذِي قَضَى أَربعِينَ عامًا فِي البَحْر، اسمًا يطلِقُه عَلى سَفِينتِه أفضلَ مِن «يهوذا الإسخريوطي» بَعدَ ما أَظهَرتْهُ مِن نَزَقٍ كُلَّما أَبحَرَ بِها للصَّيدِ أَو لنَقلِ حُمُولة؛ فكانَتْ إِمَّا تَصطدِمُ بسَفِينةٍ أُخرَى، أَو يَبتَلِعُها الضَباب، أَو تضربُ القَاع؛ لتُكبِّدَه خَسائِرَ فَادِحة. ولَم يَجدِ تَفسِيرًا لسُلوكِ السَّفِينة، التِي رُوعِيَ الإِتقَانُ فِي بِناءِ هَيكلِها وصِناعةِ أَشرِعتِها وصَوارِيها، سِوى أنَّ رُوحًا شِرِّيرةً تَسكُنُها، وَدَّ لَو أنَّ دَعواتِه وتَضرُّعاتِه كانَتْ كافِيةً لتَخلِيصِ السَّفِينةِ مِنهَا، لكِنَّها لَم تَكُنْ تُستَجاب؛ لِذَا فَقَدِ اجتَمَعَ معَ مُلَّاكِ السَّفِينةِ الآخَرينَ واتَّخذُوا قَرارًا بالإِبحَارِ بِها فِي رِحلَتِها الأَخِيرة، بَعدَ أَن كدَّسُوا فِيها كَمِّيَّةً هائِلةً مِنَ الصُّخورِ كافِيةً لإِغرَاقِها. لكِنْ هَل تَستسلِمُ السَّفِينةُ لمَصِيرِها وتَتحقَّقُ لَهُم أُمنِيةُ التَّخلُّصِ مِنهَا؟ اقرَأِ القِصَّةَ المُثِيرةَ لتَعرِفَ إِجابةَ هَذا السُّؤَال
