بحيرة ساوه Sawa lake واحدة من المظاهر الطبيعية في العراق فهي تختلف عن غيرها بعدد من الظواهر ففضلاً عن الحكايات الأسطورية التي حكيت عن وجودها وظهورها فأن ثمة حقائق علمية تؤكد غرابتها. فهي جزيرة ماء وسط صحراء مترامية حافظت على شكلها كل هذه القرون فالبحيرة حافظت على منسوب مياهها من دون أن يكون هناك مجرى مائي ظاهري يغذيها بل إنها تعتمد على مياه تتدفق من شقوق في أسفلها مما يدل على إنها تقع في جيب صخري ويبدو أن شكلها شبيهاً بالبطة تبلغ مساحتها 12.5كم2 وعمقها مابين 2.5-5.5م شكل (1). إذ أكدت الدراسة الحقلية الجيمورفولوجية والجيولوجية إن أصل البحيرة يعود إلى النشاط التشكيلي للمنطقة الذي هيأ الظروف الجيولوجية لعوامل التعرية والتجوية Erosion and Weathering التي لعبت دوراً كبيراً في تكوينها, وان ملوحتها أكثر من ملوحة مياه الخليج العربي بـ1.5 وتركيب الماء فيها مختلف عن تركيب الماء في المنطقة ومستوى الماء فيها مرتفع عن سطح الأرض المجاورة بـ5امتار وتبعد عن نهر العطشان ب 3.5 كم. كان من الضروري تفعيل المناخ العلمي لهذه البحيرة من خلال المزيد من الدراسات للبحيرة من جميع النواحي لأهميتها العلمية وما تشكله من علامة واضحة في المجالات العلمية وبناءاً على ذلك بادرت كلية العلوم / المثنى وبالتعاون مع مركز علوم البحار التابع لجامعة البصرة بإجراء دراسة حقلية جغرافية وعلمية وسياحية وتنموية لكشف أسرار البحيرة فتم تشكيل فريق عمل بحثي من كلية العلوم من متخصصين في علوم الحياة والكيمياء والفيزياء والجيولوجيا وكاتب البحث من الجغرافية بصفته متخصص بالجغرافية والتخطيط الحضري (السياحي) وفريقا آخر من مركز علوم البحار ضم 25 باحثاً علمياً من مختلف الاختصاصات وتم زيارة البحيرة وإجراء الدراسات لها خلال ثلاثة أيام وهي يوم 7,6,5 من شهر تشرين الثاني عام 2007 إذ تم جمع عينات من الماء والصخور والطحالب والفطريات والأسماك والهائمات المائية والأحياء الفقرية وغيرها وكان كاتب البحث ضمن الفريق البحثي .
