``المساجد هي بيوت الله عز وجل في الأرض ومن خلالها تم تبليغ رسالة المصطفى، تلك الرسالة التي قامت على أركان خمسة، إن صحت صح عماد الدين، وهي الصلاة والتي اقترنت بالمسجد الذي أسست خصيصاً لتقام فيه، وكانت المساجد تؤدي دورها كبيت للعبادة، ثم تطورت أدوارها إلا أن أصبحت دار مشورة وملأ للقضاء والإفتاء. أصل كلمة المسجد لغوياً، كما يوردها المعجم الوسيط الصادر عن مجمع اللغة العربية بالقاهرة: الجبهة حيث يكون ندب السجود وجمعها مساجد، والمساجد من ندب الإنسان. وفي التنزيل العزيز: ````سبحان الذي أسرى بعبده من المسجد الحرام إلى المسجد الأقصى الذي باركنا حوله لنريه من آياتنا إنه هو السميع البصير```` (الإسراء1)، كما ورد هذا اللفظ بهذه الدلالة في القرآن الكريم، حيث يقول تعالى أيضاً: ````لمسجد أسس على التقوى من أول يوم أحق أن تقوم فيه```` (التوبة 108)، ويقال له أيضاً الجامع، واختص الأزهر بذلك فقيل الجامع الأزهر. ``
