يقول الكاتب ربيع مفتاح في مقدمة هذا الكتاب الذي يضم مسرحيات قصيرة : أحببت المسرح في عمر مبكر جدا وتركز هذا الحب على دور الكلمة في المنظومة المسرحية. وهذا ما جعلني - أثناء المرحلة الجامعية في سبعينات القرن الماضي - أنكب على قراءة المسرحيات العالمية والعربية من خلال سلاسل مثل المسرح العالمي والمسرح العربي وغيرها من الإصدارات الأخرى. وكنت أحيانا أقرأ بالإنجليزية بعض المسرحيات لكتاب أمريكيين وإنجليز. وبطبيعة الحال حاولت أن أكتب ولكن كنت أنهي التجربة بعد أن أبدأها بسرعة وذلك بسبب تهيبي من المسرح باعتباره أجمل الفنون وأصعبها. تبلورت متعتي المسرحية في قراءة النصوص ومتابعة بعضها على خشبة المسرح. وحين بدأت مرحلة الترجمة وكان ذلك في عام 1987 اتجهت إلى المسرح الإنجليزي وفضلت ترجمة المسرحيات القصيرة جدا وهي غير مسرحيات الفصل الواحد.
