يرجع السلاف في أصلهم إلى مجموعة الشعوب الهندو-أوربية. وقد عاش أقدم السلافيين منذ ما يزيد على 5000عام في منطقة تشكل اليوم جزءاً من شمال غربي أوكرانيا وجنوب شرقي بولندا، لكنهم بدؤوا يهاجرون إلى أجزاء أخرى من أوربا ما بين عامي 200 و500م، فاستقر بعضهم في المناطق التي تشكل في الوقت الحاضر غربي الاتحاد السوفيتي السابق وشرقي ووسط أوربا، وهاجر فيما بعد آخرون إلى شبه جزيرة البلقان وأصبحوا يعرفون باسم البلقانيين، واستمروا في التوسع حتى القرن العاشر نحو الغرب والجنوب.
