يقول الكاتب سالم علي حلبوب: (اتخذت بريطانيا قراراً باحتلال عدن تمهيداً لبسط سيطرتها الفعلية على المدخل الجنوبي للبحر الأحمر، وهذا بعد ان فشلت المحاولات التي قام بها الكاتب هينس مع سلطان عدن محسن بن فضل العبدلي للتنازل عنها مقابل المال، ولم يكن هناك بد من الاستيلاء عليها بالقوة المسلحة وبالفعل تمكن الكابتن هينس من السيطرة الفعلية عليها في 4 ذي القعدة 1254هـ 19يناير 1839م ومنذ ذلك التاريخ أصبحت عدن ملكاً للحكومة البريطانية واتخذت بريطانيا منها قاعدة لإيقاف التوسع المصري في جنوبي الجزيرة العربية، لحماية مصالحها الاقتصادية والإستراتيجية في المنطقة.
