لعدة قرون، كتب المؤرخون ما يظنون أنه ``التاريخ العالمي``. وحاول أفراد في أماكن مختلفة وفي أوقات مختلفة إضفاء الترابط المنطقي عليه، ولكن ليس بنجاح كبير. لقد كان لتأريخه تاريخاً خاصاُ في حد ذاته حيث تم إدخال بعض المصطلحات والنُهُج المختلفة وأخري تم هجرها. في بعض الأحيان، كان يفضل كتابة ``التاريخ العالمي`` أو ``تاريخ العالم``، مع الفارق البسيط لكل كلمة. وفي الآونة الأخيرة، كان لمصطلحات أخرى بعض التفضيل ومن بينها ``التاريخ المشترك``، ``التاريخ العابر للدول`` و ``التاريخ المتصل``. أياً كان ما تفضله، كانت ثمة مشكلة لا مناص منها: ما يجب أخذه وما يجب يترك. وقال الرائد الأمريكي ``المؤرخ العالمي``، وليام ماكنيل منذ عقود إنها مسألة للنقاش والاختلاف، ولم يتغير شيء يذكر. على مدى العقود الأخيرة، قد تصارعت المجلات الأكاديمية (مجلة تاريخ العالم (الولايات المتحدة)، ومؤخرا مجلة التاريخ العالمي (المملكة المتحدة) ليس فقط مع جوانب معينة ولكن مع المجال نفسه. هؤلاء المؤرخين الذين دفعوا بهذا الموضوع إلى الأمام لم يتمتعوا كثير من الأحيان بالصبر في محاولات التعريف. فقد اعتقدوا أن إنشاء حدود جديدة صارمة سيقيدهم مرة أخرى. كان لـ ``موسوعة العالم``، بمداخلها المتعددة، استخداماتها الخاصة، ولكنها ليست ``التاريخ العالمي``. سواء تم تناولها على المدى الطويل أو القصير، فسوف تظهر الكتب في العديد من الأشكال والمظاهر. وقد حاولت سجلات العالم المعاصر في بعض الأحيان توفير ``الحقائق البارزة``، والأشياء التي بحاجة إلى أن يعرفها كل طالب في كل مكان، عام تلو الآخر، حددوا ``ما حدث``.
