إذا كان التمويل بمفهومه العام يعني المال، وإذا كان الاستثمار بمفهومه البسيط يعني استخدام المال في العمليات الاقتصادية بغية الحصول على مردود أو نتيجة، فإن كل استثمار يعتبر بالضرورة تمويلا، ولكن التمويل لا يعتبر في كل الحالات استثمارا إلا أن كلا المصطلحين مهمين في الفكر الاقتصادي خاصة إذا ربطناهما بالمشروعات، لذلك نجد أن الاقتصاد الإسلامي أعطى أهمية بالغة لعمليات التمويل لتحقيق الاستثمار، يتجلى ذلك من خلال إقامة العديد من المؤسسات المالية الإسلامية التي تعمل على تقديم التمويل اللازم لمختلف المشروعات الاقتصادية التي تتوفر على عدة شروط، وعلى رأسها السلامة الشرعية لكل معاملاتها المالية ونوعية سلعها المنتجة أو خدماتها المقدمة والتي يراعى فيها سلم الأولويات الإسلامية والالتزام بالسلوك الإسلامي في مختلف تعاملاتها، إضافة إلى مبادئ السلامة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والتي تسعى إلى تحقيق أكبر حد ممكن منها.
