من الشعراء من يُنادي في الناس: «أنا شاعر، هلمُّوا إليَّ»، ومنهم من يتنادى الناس إلى شعره وإن لم يَحُز بينهم شهرةً في حياته، وهذه حالُ «إسماعيل صبري» (أبو أميمة). التشابه بين اسمه وبين اسم شاعر مدرسة الإحياء الشهير «إسماعيل صبري باشا» وتزامُن حياتهما في رَدَحٍ منها، لم يمنحا هذا الشاعر الشهرة التي يستحقها، إلا أنهما لم يُنقِصا من قدره بوصفه شاعرًا وأديبًا وفنانًا متعدِّدَ المواهب، يفيض شعره عاطفةً يهتز لها الوجدان. جُمع ديوانه هذا ونُشر بعد وفاته، متضمِّنًا أربع مجموعات من القصائد: «الكونيات»، وتضم قصيدتين كُبريين ملحميَّتين نونية وهمزية سُمِّي على إثرهما «شاعر الكونيات»، المجموعة الثانية اجتماعية تنتمي إلى شعر المناسبات؛ يرثي ويهجو ويمدح ويهنِّئ ويتغزل ويرسل الرسائل الشعرية في حب الوطن، الثالثة «غزل الأغاني»، وهي قصائد مغنَّاة رقيقة تَغنَّى بها مشاهير مطربي عصره، الرابعة أوبريتات وأناشيد مدرسية، ويلحق الديوان مسرحية من ترجمته تحت عنوان «ربيبة الكوخ».
