قبل أن نطرق السيميائية من وجهة نظر اصطلاحية ومفهومية، أي من ناحية كونها علماً مستحدثاً له ماله من أبعاد منهجية ونقدية، فلنسجل ابتداء أن ثمة وبالأساس ما لعله يجوز لنا أن نسميه "الغريزة السيميائية" لدى الإنسان!. فإن كان ذلك غير مألوف فلا أقل من الاعتراف بوجود سلوك إنساني نوعي راسخ الأنسب أن ننعته بالسلوك السيميائي! وليس المقصود ها هنا أمراً آخر إلا فعل التوسم من حيث أنه استدلال على أمر خفي أو باطن، من ثنايا اسم أو وسم أو سمة ظاهرة عنه. وإنما الاستدلال تطلب للدلالة حيث كان. وأحسب أن السلوك السيميائي بهذا المدلول صفة لازمة للإنسان من حيث ما هو عاقل. فلا تكون الأشياء المحايثة له والخارجة عنه، إلا حمالة دلالة. وهذا مهما كان السلوك السيميائي يتراوح بين مجرد افتراض لدلالة في أدنى الأحوال وبين هوس الدلالة في أقصاها!. فإن قيل:
