هو كاتب وصحفي ومفكر ولغوي وناقد اجتماعي ومصلح ومترجم ودبلوماسي ورحالة مسلم (يهودي سابقاً) درس الفلسفة في جامعة فيينا؛ وقد عمل مراسلاً صحفياً وبعد منحه الجنسية الباكستانية تولى عدة مناصب منها منصب مبعوث باكستان إلى الأمم المتحدة في نيويورك.
وطاف العالم، ثم استقر في إسبانيا وتوفي فيها ودفن في غرناطة.
ويعتبر محمد أسد أحد أكثر مسلمي أوروبا في القرن العشرين تأثيراً مؤلفاته * منهاج الإسلام في الحكم.

يحدثنا الكاتب محمد أسد في هذا الكتاب النظام الإسلامي في الإسلام، وهو عبارة عن بحث قدمه الباحث محمد أسد بعنوان بناء الدستور الإسلامي ونشره في لاهور بإشراف الحكومة الباكستانية باللغتين الإنجليزية والأردية في آذار 1948، ولأهميته فقد سعى الأستاذ منصور محمد ماضي إلى ترجمته للعربية وذلك ليتمكن القارئ العربي من الإطلاع على ما يقدمه هذا البحث من معلومات هامة تسعى لإبراز بعض النصوص الواضحة الشريعة، والتي لها علاقة بمشاكل الدولة والحكومة، ولتناقش كيفية تطبيقها حسب مقتضيات العصر الحديث.كما ويهتم هذا البحث بلفت نظر القارئ إلى المواد الشرعية التي يجب أن تحتل مكانها في دستور يفترض فيه أنه يقوم على أساس الإسلام. كما حاولت أيضاً أن تثبت أن الشريعة الإسلامية تقدم مبادئ محددة واضحة لنظام سياسي خاص بها، تاركة لاجتهاد العصر أن يضع التفاصيل بما يحقق حاجات ذلك العصر.
