تتصف الصورة الشعريّة في قصائد النابغة الذبيانيّ باستخدام الأسلوب القصصيّ المشوّق، ويُعدّ هذا الأسلوب الحكائيّ أحد أساليب ظاهرة الاستطراد الشائعة وقتذاك، والتي استخدمها الشعراء الجاهليون في بنائهم لنص القصيدة، بحيث يؤلّف أحدهم كالذبياني مثلاً سرداً قصصياً غنيّاً بالأحداث، ليظهر في نص الشعر، ومن جانبه فقد ركّز الذبياني على تصوير حيوان الوحش كأحد التصاوير المشوّقة في كثير من قصائده
