على امتداد التاريخ حاول البشر بلوغ هذه الحالة علهم يلامسون تخومها، وما إن يشعروا باقتراب تلك التخوم حتى تبدأ رحلة التيه، يتحيرون، وتحيرهم تلك الشرفات الضبابية الأخاذة، يتخبطون في وصفها ومحاولة تعريفها وتحليلها. حيرة عانتها الصوفية في عالم التدين، وعانتها البوذية في عالم الوثنية، وعانتها السوريالية في عالم الحداثة المادية اللادينية. كل هذه التوجهات تتوهم أنها في الطريق إلى تجاوز تلك الحدود، واختراق تلك العتمة، وملامسة تلك العتبات التي تصل عالم المادة بعالم الروح عند الصوفية، أو ما بعد النرفانا عند البوذية، أو الخط الذي يفصل عالم الوعي عن عالم اللاوعي عند السوريالية. الكل مشتاق، متحرق إلى معرفة ما بعد عالم الأرقام والأحجام، الكل متلهف لبلوغ النقطة التي تنمحي فيها الفواصل في هذا الكون، غياب الفواصل بين الجسد والروح، والغيب والشهادة.
