يؤرخ أبو شامة في كتابه هذا لحقبة تبلغ نصف قرن، تمتد من عام 540 ه إلى عام 589 هـ، وهذه الحقبة تشمل الدولتين: النورية التي قادها نور الدين زنكي (511-569 هـ)، والدولة الصلاحية التي وضع صلاح الدين قواعدها حتى وفاته عام 589 هـ. يتتبع أبو شامة في الكتاب إنجازات كل من نور الدين وصلاح الدين، فيتحدث عن موضوعات شتى تتعلق بالدولة والحروب مثل: تنقلات الجيوش، وأوصاف الأسلحة، ووصف المعارك والحصون والسفن الحربية، كما يتحدث عن المجابهات التي دارت بين الفريقين، مستعينا بالوثائق الرسمية وبالقصائد الشعرية التي تحدثت عن المعارك، والتي يعد كتابه مصدرا من مصادرها، نظرا لجمعه لها وحرصه على تبويبها. إن قيمة هذا الكتاب تتمثل في طبيعة التأليف التاريخي في تلك الحقبة القائمة على النقل والجمع، فكتاب الروضتين ينقل نصوصا كثيرة من كتب ابن عساكر، والعماد الأصفهاني، ابن الأثير، وابن شداد، ورسائل القاضي الفاضل، لكنه يحسن التنسيق والربط والترتيب....
