إذا كان عنوان الكتاب هو «أرض الدول الفاشلة» فإن الكاتب يقول إن الدولة تكون «فاشلة» لو عجزت عن التصدى للأخطار والتحديات المسلحة التى تتجه إلى فرض السيطرة على جزء كبير من أرض الدولة وممارسة ألوان الفوضى على ذلك الجزء.. ويرى الكاتب أن من أهم المحركات لانتشار ظاهرة الدول الفاشلة فى الشرق الأوسط ذلك الاحتراق المتواصل لحركة «الجماعات الجهادية» التى تمارس العنف المسلح. ويبرهن الكاتب أن التدهور والانهيار تسارع بشكل أوضح بعد الثورة الإيرانية عام 1979 بدخول عامل الدين فى الصراع سنة العراق وشيعة إيران ثم حرب الولايات المتحدة ضد صدام حسين عام 2003 التى أعادت السيطرة للأغلبية الشيعية وهو الزمر الذى أدى الى ظهور جماعات سنية متطرفة مثل «القاعدة» فى العراق ثم ظاهرة الحكومة الإسلامية أو الدولة الإسلامية داعش فى عام 2014 وهى كلها مؤشرات على انهيار سلطة الدولة وتفاقم ظاهرة الطائفية.
