يعد كتاب الأنساب للسمعاني من أشهر ما كتب في هذا العلم، وهو كتاب ضخم في ثماني مجلدات، افتتحه بمقدمة في أنساب العرب، وهو عندما يورد نسبة أحد إلى قبيلة يتبعها بشيء من أنسابها، والكتاب خلافاً لظاهر عنوانه ليس في الأنساب بمعنى تسلسل الآباء والأجداد، وإنما يراد به انتساب المرء إلى بلد أو انتماؤه إلى قبيلة، أو إلى صناعة أو تجارة، وحين يذكر السمعاني مادة ترجمته يحرص على ضبط حروفها وحركاتها لفظاّ، ثم يذكر أصل تلك النسبة، من بلد أو رجل أو قبيلة، ويعمد إلى تعريفها.....
