شهدت القارة الأمريكية في أوائل الستينات من القرن السابع عشر حركة هجرة واسعة من أوربا، وهذه الحركة التي امتدت إلى أكثر من ثلاثة قرون. شيدت حضارة جديدة على ارض كانت موحشة وبعيدة. وكان من العوامل التي دفعت بمعظم المهاجرين هي البحث عن فرص للحياة أفضل، والتخلص من الاضطهاد السياسي والديني والرغبة في الحرية الدينية، ذات المنحى الإصلاحي. ومن هنا بدأت الحركات الدينية والسياسية تظهر في هذه القارة الجديدة، مما جعلها حلماً يتخلص فيه الإنسان من الاضطهاد؛ ويمارس حريته في كافة المجالات من دون قيود . وبهذا أصبح المجتمع الأمريكي متعدداً متنوعاً . لقد احتوت الثقافة الأمريكية دائما على دافع ديمقراطي، في مجالات الحياة الأمريكية ،ولعل المجال الأهم الذي جرى فيه أكثر من غيره التعبير عن هذا الدافع، هو الدين، لذلك ظهرت حركات دينية وملل ،ذات تشكيل روحاني بالدرجة الأولى أكثر منها ذات قضايا طبقية، لكن كثيرا ما اختلط النوعان معا . كانت القارة الأمريكية في بداية القرن السابع عشر تعج بالمذاهب والطوائف المسيحية بسبب قدوم المهاجرين إليها من كل حدب وصوب . اذ تطورت هذه الحركات انطلاقا من قناعة مفادها ان المذاهب الرئيسة لم تكن روحية بالقدر الكافي، وقد استهوت هذه الآراء أشخاصا من طبقات اجتماعية مختلفة .ومن هذه الحركات ظهور حركة دينية في القرن التاسع عشر شبه مسيحية تدعى (المورمون Mormons) أو (كنيسة يسوع المسيح لقديسي اليوم الأخير The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter –Day Saints) ومن خلال هذه الدراسة نسلط الضوء على الخلفية التاريخية التي أدت إلى ظهور هذه الحركة الدينية، ومؤسسها، واهم معتقداتها وتأثيرها في المجتمع الأمريكي.
