تحدث الكتاب حديثاً طويلاً عن حياة عمال الزراعة والتراحيل من أيام السخرة في مصر محمد علي ومصر شبه المستعمرة ومصر شبه الإقطاعية والرأسمالية حيث كان الفضل كل الفضل لهؤلاء العمال في بناء القناطر الخيرية رغم انتشار مرض الطاعون وفي حفر الترع ، والرياحات وإنشاء الطرق ، وبناء خطوط السكك الحديدية وحفر قناة السويس والتخديم على الجيوش البريطانية في الحرب العالمية الأولى كل هذه الأشغال كانت السخرة والعمل الإكراهي لعمال الزراعة والتراحيل..ثم تحدث الكتاب عن أحوال هؤلاء العمال المعيشية والسرية حتى قيام ثورة يوليو 1952 التي زادت من أجورهم ، وسمحت لهم بقيام نقابات عمالية. نقابات ذات طبيعة سلطوية وكما قدمت لهم ثورة يوليو بعض المشاريع التي تتولى تشغيلهم بطرق إدارية لا تنفع ولا تشفع..
