هو شاعر مصرى معاصر ولد ببلدة النخيلة بمحافظة أسيوط عام 1910, تخرج في كلية دار العلوم عام 1936.
نبغ في الشعر نبوغا مبكرًا فقد أصدر ديوانه الأول وهو طالب سنة 1935 بعنوان "أغانى الكوخ" و نال جائزة الدولة في الشعر سنة 1965 وله دواوين كثيرة منها "لابد" و"تائهون". توفي سنة 1977 في الكويت وعاد جثمانه ليدفن في مصر.

وقد صدرت مجموعة أشعاره الكاملة، وكان شعر محمود حسن إسماعيل موضوعاً لعدة رسائل جامعية باعتباره لوناً فريداً في الشعر العربي المعاصر لواحد من أبرز شعراء التجديد
ومن قصائده المغناة "النهر الخالد" و"دعاء الشرق" اللتان غناهما الموسيقار محمد عبد الوهاب،و"بغداد يا قلعة الأسود" التي غنتها أم كلثوم، و"نداء الماضي" التي غناها عبد الحليم حافظ، وأنشودة "يد الله" للمطربة نجاح سلام.

جائزة الدولة التشجيعية عام 1964
وسام تقدير من الرئيس التونسي الحبيب بورقيبة
Book Description
تشكّل الكتاب من أربعة أبواب، خُصص (الأول) عن حياته ومرحلته الشعرية، وقسم المؤلف هذا الباب إلى فصلين قدّم الأولُ منهما سيرةً ذاتيةً للشاعر؛ شملت طفولته فى القرية، وتعليمه، وانتقاله للقاهرة، والوظائف التى تقلَّدها، والجوائز التى حصل عليها، وغربته وغير ذلك من أحداث، وتحدَّث فى الفصل (الثانى) عن المرحلة الشعرية بعد (شوقى) وجماعة (أبوللو)، وخروج جماعة الشعر الحر من عباءة (أبوللو)، وخصص الحديث حول إنتاج الشاعر ودواوينه، وكذلك القصائد التى لُحِّنت له وغنّاها كبارُ المطربين.
