دور الدين في المجتمع كيف تكونت الظاهرة الدينية، ومتى عرف الإنسان المقدَّس، فأحدث له الطقوس، وقام بممارسات خاصة، كانت محور حياة الجماعات الدينية. لقد حاولت العقائد وضع تفسيرات للحياة والموت وما بعد الموت والوجود والخلق والخير والشر، لتنظيم الحياة الروحية للجماعة، وكان للكهنة ورجال الدين دور كبير في المجتمع والسياسة.ومع ظهور الأديان التوحيدية في منطقة الشرق المتوسط وتقديمها تصوراً مختلفاً عن العالم، بدأت تتكون الصراعات التي استمرت حتى العصور الوسطى، حين تحولت تلك الصراعات إلى حروب، كان الدين محورها الأساسي.وفي القرن العشرين ومع الحربيين العالميتين، وما أفرزتاه من تدمير ومآس وضحايا على مستوى العالم، حدثت مخاضات فكرية قوية وجديدة، خصوصاً في أوربا، وانتشرت تساؤلات حول المغزى من الوجود، ومصير الإنسانية ودور الدين، والعلمانية، والفكر الاشتراكي، والإلحاد. كل تلك الدعوات وصلت أصداؤها إلى الشرق الأوسط الذي انطلقت منه الديانات التوحيدية، ليعاد طرح السؤال مجدداً عن دور الدين في المجتمع.
