كان كتاب" إسلامية المعرفة" المبادئ العامة وخطة العمل، الذي أصدره المعهد العالمي للفكر الإسلامي للمرة الأولى عام 1984، بياناً أولياً لاتجاه الحركة والفكرة التي قدمها المعهد، ومحاولة اجتهادية لتصور الجهود المطلوبة في ذلك الاتجاه. ثم كانت ورقة العمل التي اصدرها المعهد بعنوان " إصلاح الفكر الإسلامي بين القدرات والعقبات" للمرة الأولى عام 1991 إعادة صياغة للمبادئ العامة وخطة العمل، في ضوء الخبرة التي تراكمت والجهود التي بذلت منذ إنشاء المعهد حتى عام 1989، حيث تم في هذه الفترة افتتاح عدد من المكاتب والفروع. وتم تنفيذ بعض البرامج والمشروعات.وقد تضمنت تلك الورقة فيما تضمنت عرضا لمكونات الواقع الإسلامي بما تمثله تلك المكونات من قدرات أو معوقات. وتأتي هذه الرسالة " إصلاح الفكر الإسلامي: نظم الخطاب في الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر، وهي تحمل تعديلات جرت في ورقة العمل السابقة، سمحت ببعض التعديلات في العنوان لتغير بعض معالم الدراسة بما طرأ عليها من إضافات. وهذه الرسالة وإن اشتملت في صياغتها الأخيرة على كثير من خصائص الخطاب العام، فإنها لم تخرج تماماً عن إطار خصوصيتها الفكرية والثقافية.ونحسب أن الأفكار المعروضة فيها تهم كل من يحمل نصيبا من هموم الأزمة الفكرية التي تعاني منها الأمة، وأن قراءتها تستلزم قدراً من الصبر والحيدة والإحساس بأهمية الفكر والثقافة في البناء الحضاري الإسلامي المنشود.
