عندما خلق الإنسان تحقيقاً لسنة الله في تعمير الأرض، كانت الحشرات قد سبقته إلى الوجود ومكنت لنفسها، ومع ذلك فإن الإنسان يعدها المزاحم الأول له على وجه الأرض، فهي تصادفه في كل مجالات حياته، ويعاني منها ألواناً من الأذى في معاشه وصحته، ولهذا ارتبطت كلمة "حشرة" في أذهان الناس بالشر والقبح، حتى أصبحوا يطلقونها على كل ضار من الحيوانات، وينعتون بها كل من يصدر عنه ما لا يحبون من التصرفات والأعمال، على أن هذه المجموعة من المخلوقات لا تخلو من أنواع نافعة كالنحلة ودودة الحرير، وقد عرف الإنسان بما أتيح له من وسائل التقدم العلمي كيف يستغل هذه الأنواع لصالحه وزيادة أسباب رزقه ورفاهيته.
